Bruno Sammartino

Bruno Sammartino was the longest-reigning world champion in WWWF history, holding the promotion's top title for nearly eight years across his first reign alone — a record that will almost certainly never be broken. To immigrant audiences in the northeastern United States in the 1960s and 1970s, the Italian-born strongman was more than a wrestler; he was a folk hero.

Sammartino sold out Madison Square Garden a reported 187 times, headlining against villains like Killer Kowalski, George The Animal Steele and Superstar Billy Graham. His two WWWF Championship reigns combined for more than 4,000 days on top.

After years of estrangement from the company over creative direction, Sammartino reconciled with WWE and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2013. He passed away in 2018. On WrestleRanks, he represents the gold standard of the championship era that built New York wrestling.
