Wrestler Profile

Steve Austin

Stone Cold Steve Austin is arguably the biggest drawing card in professional wrestling history. After early runs in WCW as Stunning Steve Austin and a brief ECW stint, he arrived in the WWF in 1995 and transformed into the beer-drinking, authority-defying antihero who carried wrestling to record popularity during the Attitude Era.

His feud with chairman Vince McMahon from 1997 through 1999 remains the template for wrestler-versus-boss storytelling, and his matches with Bret Hart — especially their submission match at WrestleMania 13, which turned Austin into a hero without him saying a word — are studied to this day. He is a six-time WWF Champion and won the Royal Rumble three times, a record.

Neck injuries forced Austin to retire from full-time competition in 2003, but the glass shatter of his entrance music remains one of the loudest pops in wrestling. On WrestleRanks he anchors the all-time conversation: when fans debate the greatest of all time, Austin 3:16 is always in the argument.
